How Dodo Payments fees are calculated
The base rate is 4% + $0.40 for cards and wallets, so a $100 sale to a US customer costs $4.40 and you receive $95.60.
An international card adds 1.5% ($5.90), and subscriptions add another 0.5%, so a subscription payment from an international customer costs $6.40.
ACH Direct Debit from a US bank is 1.5% (capped at $15.00). If the customer pays in their local currency, the conversion spread (2–4%) is paid by the customer by default, unless you choose to absorb it.
When does a merchant of record make sense?
A merchant of record is the legal seller your customer buys from. It calculates, collects and remits sales tax and VAT in every country and handles disputes, which saves you registering for tax in many places.
The trade-off is a higher fee. The same US sale on Stripe costs $3.20 instead of $4.40, but with Stripe you are responsible for tax. Many founders start on a merchant of record and move to Stripe on a US company once sales grow.
