The short answer

Airwallex is a payment processor combined with a multi-currency business account. Its card rates are lower than Dodo Payments', but it opens accounts only for companies registered in its eligible countries, and because your business stays the seller, sales tax and VAT are your responsibility. Dodo Payments is a merchant of record: the company that legally sells to your customer, calculates, collects and remits the sales tax or VAT on each sale, and pays you what remains after its fees. It onboards sellers from many countries and charges more per sale for that role.

As published on 28 September 2026, a $100 sale on a US card costs $3.10 with Airwallex and $4.40 with Dodo Payments, a gap of $1.30. On a $1,000 sale with an international card, the fees are $43.30 and $55.40, a gap of $12.10.

The deciding factor is the tax trade-off. If you have a company in an eligible country and can handle sales tax and VAT registration yourself, or your sales do not create those obligations, Airwallex keeps more of each sale. If you sell software or digital products to buyers in many countries and want someone else to carry the tax work, Dodo Payments' higher fee buys that.

Fees on the same sale

"Intl" means a card issued outside the US; "+ FX" means the buyer pays in another currency and the gateway converts.

Scenario Airwallex Dodo Payments
$100 US card fee $3.10 / net $96.90 fee $4.40 / net $95.60
$100 intl card fee $4.60 / net $95.40 fee $5.90 / net $94.10
$100 intl card + FX fee $5.60 / net $94.40 fee $5.90 / net $94.10
$100 intl subscription fee $4.60 / net $95.40 fee $6.40 / net $93.60
$29 US subscription fee $1.11 / net $27.89 fee $1.71 / net $27.29
$29 intl subscription fee $1.55 / net $27.45 fee $2.15 / net $26.85
$1000 intl card fee $43.30 / net $956.70 fee $55.40 / net $944.60
Charge needed to net $100 (US card) $103.19 $104.58

The gap starts with the base rate: 2.8% + $0.30 against 4% + $0.40. Both add 1.5% for international cards, so the difference is $1.30 on a $100 sale whether the card is US or international, and $12.10 on $1,000. Subscriptions widen it, because Dodo Payments adds 0.5% on recurring charges and our Airwallex figures include no subscription surcharge (its billing product is not priced here): $4.60 against $6.40 on a $100 international subscription.

Conversion narrows it. When the buyer pays in another currency, Airwallex charges its FX margin to you, which takes its fee to $5.60, while Dodo Payments' Adaptive Currency passes a 2–4% conversion fee to the buyer by default, so your fee stays at $5.90 and the gap falls to $0.30. If you choose to absorb that conversion fee on Dodo Payments, the gap opens again.

These are transaction fees only; payout costs and disputes are separate. Model your own sales with the Airwallex fee calculator, the Dodo Payments fee calculator or the payment gateway fee comparison.

Airwallex in practice

Airwallex combines card acceptance with a multi-currency business account, so the money you collect can be held, converted and sent from the same place. On its US pricing page, online card payments cost 2.8% + $0.30 for US cards and 4.3% + $0.30 for international cards. FX is 0.5% above the interbank rate for major currencies such as GBP and 1% for others; the Saudi riyal, the UAE dirham and the Egyptian pound fall into the 1% group. Local transfers are free to many countries, while SWIFT transfers carry a fee. The Explore plan costs $0 a month, and paid plans add features.

What you give up is the tax role. Airwallex processes the payment, but your business is the seller. If selling digital products to consumers in US states, the EU, the UK or elsewhere creates a sales tax or VAT obligation, working out where you owe it, registering, collecting and filing is your job, or your accountant's. For a business selling mostly to other businesses, or only in a few places, that may be manageable; for one selling small subscriptions worldwide, it is real ongoing work.

The other limit is eligibility. Airwallex opens accounts for businesses registered in its eligible countries and may decline activity outside its risk appetite, as its eligibility page says. Disputes cost $15 each.

Dodo Payments in practice

Dodo Payments sells your product to the customer in its own name as merchant of record. It calculates, collects and remits sales tax and VAT, so you do not need to register in each country where your buyers are. Check that your product type is accepted before building on it; a merchant of record decides what it will sell on your behalf.

Its pricing is 4% + $0.40 for cards and wallets, plus 1.5% for international payments and 0.5% for subscriptions. ACH Direct Debit costs 1.5%, capped at $15. There is no monthly fee. With Adaptive Currency, buyers can pay in their own currency, and by default they pay a 2–4% conversion fee; you can choose to absorb it instead.

Payouts follow the payout structure: a payout under $1,000 costs $5, one of $1,000 or more is free, and payouts go out twice a month by default once the balance is above $50. Small sellers should count that $5, because on a low monthly balance it is a noticeable share. A refund costs $1 and a chargeback $30, twice Airwallex's dispute fee.

Who can use each one from Egypt or the Gulf

Airwallex opens accounts for businesses registered in its eligible countries, and its US entity onboards US-registered companies. Whether a company registered in Egypt, Saudi Arabia or the UAE qualifies, and through which Airwallex entity, is answered on the eligible countries and territories page; check the table for your company's country of registration rather than your own nationality.

Dodo Payments onboards sellers from many countries as a merchant of record. The exact supported list must be checked on its site before you apply, and the payout destination you plan to use should be confirmed at the same time.

A US LLC is what opens the US-priced Airwallex account described here, and it is one route to a Dodo Payments account at the rates above. Foundlie forms the US LLC and obtains the EIN; each provider still decides after its own review, and approval is never guaranteed.

Which one to choose

Choose Airwallex if:

  • You have, or will have, a company registered in an eligible country, such as a US LLC.
  • You want the lower card rate and a multi-currency account to hold and send the money.
  • You sell mostly to businesses, or in few enough places that you can handle sales tax or VAT yourself.
  • Your volume is high enough for the per-sale gap to matter: $12.10 on every $1,000 international sale.

Choose Dodo Payments if:

  • You sell software or digital products to consumers in many countries and want the tax registered, collected and remitted for you.
  • You do not have a company in an Airwallex-eligible country and Dodo Payments supports your country.
  • Many buyers pay in their own currency and you are content for them to carry the conversion fee.
  • You would rather pay $1.30 more per $100 than run tax filings.

Using both can make sense in one business: Dodo Payments for consumer sales of digital products, where the tax handling carries most weight, and Airwallex for business clients and for holding and converting currency. If you want Dodo Payments to pay out into an Airwallex account, confirm with Dodo Payments that the destination is supported.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper for a $1,000 international sale?

Airwallex. As published on 28 September 2026, a $1,000 sale on an international card costs $43.30 with Airwallex and $55.40 with Dodo Payments, leaving you $956.70 or $944.60. With Airwallex, any sales tax or VAT on that sale is still yours to handle.

Why is the gap smaller when the buyer pays in another currency?

Because the conversion cost falls on different people. Airwallex charges its FX margin to you, which raises its fee on a $100 international sale from $4.60 to $5.60. Dodo Payments' Adaptive Currency passes a 2–4% fee to the buyer by default, so your fee stays at $5.90 and the gap drops to $0.30.

If I use Airwallex, who handles sales tax and VAT?

You do. Airwallex is a payment processor, so your business is the seller. If your sales create an obligation in a US state or another country, registering, collecting and filing are your responsibility.

Can I use Airwallex or Dodo Payments without a US company?

Airwallex requires a company registered in one of its eligible countries; check the eligible-countries page for your company's country. Dodo Payments onboards sellers from many countries, so a US company is not necessarily required; check its supported list. A US LLC is one route to the US-priced accounts, and each provider reviews every application.

What do payouts cost?

On Dodo Payments, $5 per payout under $1,000 and free from $1,000, twice a month by default once the balance passes $50. On Airwallex, local transfers are free to many countries and SWIFT transfers carry a fee; converting into riyals, dirhams or Egyptian pounds uses the 1% FX tier.
